About this calculator
Percentage-off sales can be harder to compare mentally than they look, especially when stacking a coupon on top of a storewide discount. This calculator takes an item's original price and a discount percentage and instantly shows the sale price and exactly how much money the discount saves you, in whatever currency you shop in.
How it works
The discount amount is the original price multiplied by the discount percentage, and the sale price is the original price minus that discount: Sale price = Price × (1 − discount / 100). This is the same formula retailers use to set sale tags, so it's a reliable way to double-check a price at checkout.
Worked example
An $89.99 item at 30% off saves you $27.00, bringing the sale price to $62.99.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate two discounts stacked together?
Apply them one after another, not added together: a 20% discount followed by a further 10% off comes to a 28% total discount, not 30%, because the second discount applies to the already-reduced price. Run this calculator twice, once on the original price and again on the resulting sale price.
Does this include sales tax?
No, this calculates the discount on the listed price only. Tax is typically applied after the discount, based on the sale price, but tax rules vary by location.
How do I reverse-engineer the discount percentage from a sale price?
Subtract the sale price from the original price, divide by the original price, and multiply by 100: ((Original − Sale) / Original) × 100.
